What Is DVT and Why Does It Matters in Cosmetic Surgery?

When preparing for cosmetic surgery, patient safety is always the top priority. One of the most serious risks associated with surgical procedures is deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition in which a blood clot forms in a deep vein, typically in the legs. Although the risk of DVT is low, especially in healthy patients, understanding and preventing it is an important part of surgical planning. At Modern Surgical Arts of Denver, Dr. Kamran Dastoury and the team prioritize prevention to minimize risks and ensure the safest possible outcomes.

About Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a clot forms in the deep veins of the body, most commonly in the legs. These clots can block normal blood flow and may become life-threatening if they travel to the lungs, which is a complication known as pulmonary embolism (PE). Prolonged immobility during recovery, stress, and the use of certain medications can increase the likelihood of blood clot formation. Although DVT is rare in cosmetic surgery, awareness and prevention are essential for every patient undergoing a procedure.

Why DVT Prevention Matters in Cosmetic Surgery

Any operation that requires anesthesia and a recovery period with reduced mobility can increase the risk of DVT. Cosmetic surgeries such as abdominoplasty, liposuction, or body contouring can temporarily affect circulation, and certain patient factors can increase this risk. These include the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), oral contraceptives, smoking, or a family history of blood-clotting disorders. Dr. Dastoury’s approach combines thorough patient screening, clear communication, and consistent prevention protocols to reduce the likelihood of clotting.

Hormone Therapy and DVT Risk After Plastic Surgery

Hormone replacement therapy with oral estrogen is one of the most significant factors influencing DVT risk in surgical patients. Studies have shown that oral estrogen can increase the likelihood of DVT by two to four times.

For this reason, patients taking oral estrogen are advised to pause its use for four weeks prior to elective surgery, or at least two weeks if the surgery date is approaching. Estrogen may be resumed one to two weeks after surgery once your initial healing has occurred.

Progesterone therapy does not have the same level of concern and may be continued to help manage symptoms while you are off of estrogen. Patients are encouraged to coordinate with their primary care provider or OB-GYN to plan a safe transition off estrogen before surgery.

Dr. Dastoury’s Protocol for DVT Prevention

At Modern Surgical Arts of Denver, every patient is assessed for DVT risk using the Caprini scoring system, which helps determine who may benefit from additional precautions. Depending on the patient’s risk factors, Dr. Dastoury may recommend medical interventions to support healthy circulation and prevent the formation of blood clots.

These may include the use of compression devices during and after surgery and prophylactic medication such as Heparin. Patients with estrogen pellets, progesterone IUDs, or other hormone therapies are also carefully evaluated, and their care plan is documented to ensure all precautions are in place.

Modern Surgical Arts of Denver’s safety record reflects a commitment to consistent standards of care and patient monitoring. The team’s proactive approach, combining evidence-based medicine, detailed preoperative planning, and open communication, ensures that every patient receives high-quality care designed to support a smooth recovery.
