What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes stubborn fat you can’t seem to get rid of through diet and exercise. It uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific body areas. We usually perform the procedure on the arms, back, abdomen, buttocks, face, hips, and thighs to improve their shape. When you gain weight, the fat cells increase in size and volume; after liposuction, the skin molds itself into the new contours of the treated areas. Liposuction is also called Lipoplasty, Liposculpture, Lipo, Suction Lipectomy, or Body Contouring.

Candidates for Liposuction

A good candidate for liposuction is an individual in good overall health who has realistic expectations and stubborn fat deposits that have not responded to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

Liposuction Procedure

There are several different types of liposuction procedures, but they all share a commonality: the use of a thin tube known as the cannula. The cannula is connected to a vacuum that suctions the fat from the body. The list below provides the most popular types of liposuction. During your consultation, you can determine which type is best for you.

Tumescent Liposuction

This is the most common technique of liposuction. The surgeon injects a sterile solution into the area where the fat is to be removed; it consists of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine. This solution makes it easier to suction the fat with less blood loss and pain.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction  (UAL)

This uses sound wave energy to rupture the fat cell walls under your skin. The rupture of the cell walls liquefies the fat for suction.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (Smart Lipo)

This method uses a laser to produce a burst of energy to liquefy the fat for suction.

Power-Assisted Liposuction

This uses a cannula that moves back and forth rapidly. This vibration allows the surgeon to pull out more stubborn fat more efficiently. This can sometimes cause less pain and swelling, allowing the surgeon to remove the fat more precisely.

Liposuction Results and Recovery

Liposuction recovery time varies from person to person, but most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days after the procedure. Following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions is vital to ensure a smooth recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the do's and don'ts after liposuction?

After liposuction, we provide full instructions and patients are recommended to follow Dr. Dastoury’s post-op instructions closely, including wearing your compression garment full time for the first 3 week of surgery and attending follow-up appointments. Follow up appointments are on a weekly bases and lymph drainage therapy is also provided at that time which helps drain any fluids trapped in the tissues leading to quicker healing. Don’t engage in strenuous activities or expose the treated area to excessive sun until you're fully healed.

How many days does it take to recover from liposuction?

Initial recovery from liposuction usually takes about 1-2 weeks, and most patients may return to work after this time, but swelling may take a few months to fully subside. Many people can resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks. final aesthetic results are 3-6 months.

How long will my stomach be tight after liposuction?

Tightness or firmness in the treated area can last for several weeks to 6 months, as the body adjusts to the new contours and swelling decreases. This feeling typically resolves as healing progresses.

What is the best age for liposuction?

While there is no "best" age, patients in their 20s to 50s with good skin elasticity and a stable weight are often ideal. Your health and skin condition are more important factors than age.

Will people notice I had lipo?

If you choose an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and follow post-op care instructions, most people won’t notice you had liposuction. The goal is to create a natural look, and changes will likely appear as gradual body contouring improvements.

How can I maximize my liposuction results?

To maintain your results, follow a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and exercise regularly once you're cleared for physical activity. Starting at your ideal body weight will help maintain the results because gaining weight after the procedure may compromise your result. Compression garments and proper aftercare also help shape the final outcome during your initial recovery. We also provide lymph drainage sessions and teach you and your caregiver how to perform them at home in order to maximize your results and lead to quicker healing.

What is the BMI cut off for liposuction?

Many cosmetic surgeons consider a BMI in the low 30’s though it may vary on the individual person. Lower BMI candidates typically achieve more predictable and safer results, but Dr. Dastoury will determine the best approach during a consultation based on your gender, muscle mass, height, and body composition, and any history of gastric bypass surgery.
