Are you considering a brow lift procedure to enhance your facial features? Brow lifts are one of the most popular types of plastic surgery, as they can help you look younger, attractive, and also boost your self-confidence. If you are planning to lift your brow to improve the appearance of your forehead then you have just landed at the right place, as here we will tell you all you need to know about a brow lift, including the different procedures involved and the post-care tips that you need to follow.

What is Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a form of plastic surgery in which the skin and soft tissues of the forehead are raised to lift the brows and give them a more youthful appearance. As a person ages, wrinkles develop along the forehead and between the eyes that create a tired, bad-tempered appearance. In addition, aging causes the skin’s tissues to lose their elasticity, which causes the brow to droop over the eyelids and make you look even more tired.

With the help of a brow lift, your wrinkles can be reduced and your brows can be lifted so that you look more refreshed, youthful and pleasant. You can also opt for a brow lift if you have asymmetrical brows owing to injury or a birth defect.

Why is it best?

A brow lift is a highly popular form of plastic surgery as it can restore the youthful quality of your face in many ways.

  • It corrects the frown lines that often appear between the eyebrows.
  • It smoothens out wrinkles on the forehead and on the bridge of the nose.
  • It lifts sagging brows that droop over the eyelids.
  • It repositions eyebrows so as to look more lively and youthful.
  • It corrects any asymmetries in the brow due to a birth defect or an injury.
  • Any adult who enjoys good physical health can opt for a brow lift.
  • The procedure itself takes a maximum of two hours and involves a speedy recovery time.

Endoscopic brow lift

In this technique, your doctor makes use of an endoscope, which is a long narrow tube with a small camera at the end. After making multiple small incisions behind the hairline, your doctor will insert the endoscope through one of the incisions and examine the tissues and muscles below. Accordingly, the doctor will insert a special tool through another incision and raise your forehead tissues, fixing them to their new position with the help of temporary screws or sutures. Your incisions are then closed with stitches or staples.

Coronal brow lift

This technique involves making an incision behind your hairline that extends from ear to ear. Your doctor will then raise the skin of your forehead as needed so that the portion of the scalp behind your incision and the scalp in front of it overlaps. This overlapping portion is cut off and the remaining scalp is stitched together. This technique, however, is not recommended if you have a receding hairline or are prone to losing hair.

Hairline brow lift

This technique is ideal for patients with high or receding hairlines. In this method, your doctor makes the incision between the start of your hairline and the top of your forehead. After that, he or she removes a portion of the tissue and skin from the top of the forehead, instead of your hairline. This way, your hairline doesn’t get affected and your brow still gains that lifted appearance. Bear in mind, however, that this technique could leave a scar.

How to prepare for a Brow Lift?

Before your brow lift is scheduled, it is important for you to have one or more brow consultations with your doctor so that you have a clear idea of what to expect. Keep the following points in mind before opting for a brow lift:

Thoroughly research your doctor

You should always get a brow lift done by a certified plastic surgeon with a solid reputation. Carefully research the surgeon’s track record in brow lift and evaluate the clinic’s reputation as well. Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends, family, and colleagues can also be helpful in this regard.

Share your full medical history

Your doctor will require full details of your past medical history, including any other surgeries you may have undergone, any chronic ailments or allergies you suffer from, any medicines you currently take (including herbal remedies and vitamins) and your history of alcohol and tobacco usage. This is important because certain medical conditions may disqualify you from undergoing plastic surgery. For example, if you are prone to excessive bleeding, your doctor may discuss non-surgical alternatives to a brow lift. Your doctor may also ask you to stop smoking and avoid aspirins or other over-the-counter medications before the brow lift.

Get a clear idea of the final results

It is important that you have as many discussions as possible with your doctor to understand exactly what the outcome of your brow lift will look like. Your doctor will study your forehead region and ask you to make multiple facial expressions so as to evaluate how your brow lift should go. He or she will also take photographs of you from multiple angles and use computer software to create a ‘before-and-after’ visualization of your brow. In addition, you should clear your doubts about the post-surgery care and any potential complications that may arise.

Be honest about your expectations

You may feel hesitant about opening up to your doctor about the reasons behind your desire for a brow lift, especially if your main motivation is to look more youthful and attractive. However, it is important to state your expectations clearly so that the doctor can show you exactly what is achievable and what is not.

The Brow Lift Procedure

A brow lift usually takes place in an outpatient surgery room or in hospital. The procedure generally takes around two hours and you can go home immediately afterward. As you may require some assistance for a few days after the surgery, you are advised to ask a friend or family member to stay with you if you normally live alone.

  • A brow lift can easily be done with the help of local anesthesia. However, your doctor may give you general anesthesia if you feel more comfortable that way.
  • A typical brow lift can be done in one of two main ways – the endoscopic method and the coronal method. In each case, your doctor will make incisions on your brow and lift the tissues of your forehead so as to raise the brows and eliminate any drooping. In the hairline technique, your doctor may make an incision and remove tissues from your forehead so that your hairline is not pulled back. This technique is useful if you already have a receding hairline.
  • After the brow lift is complete, your doctor will seal the skin together with staples or stitches and bandage your forehead. In some cases, your doctor may also attach fixation screws beneath your hairline to hold your brow in place that will usually come off within a week. The doctor may also attach a small tube by the side of the wound to drain off any pus or blood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can you not do after a brow lift?

After a brow lift, you should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and bending over for at least 2-3 weeks. You’ll also need to sleep with your head elevated and avoid rubbing or applying pressure to your surgical site.

How long does it take to look normal after a brow lift?

Most swelling and bruising subside within 2 to 3 weeks, but it can take several months for results to fully settle. Many patients feel comfortable returning to social activities after 10–14 days.

Can you still move your eyebrows after a brow lift?

Yes, when performed by a knowledgeable board certified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Dastoury, a brow lift preserves normal eyebrow movement. Some tightness or reduced motion can happen during recovery, but natural expression typically returns as you heal.

Does brow lift change eye shape?

A brow lift can subtly enhance the appearance of the eyes by lifting heavy or sagging brows, but it doesn’t change the actual shape of the eyes. It may create a more open, refreshed look, especially if you have signs of aging.

What is the alternative to a brow lift?

Non-surgical alternatives to a brow lift include Botox to relax forehead muscles and lift the brows temporarily. Botox is less invasive but offers shorter-term results.

How much down time do you need for a brow lift?

Most patients need about 10-14 days of downtime before resuming normal activities. Full recovery, including resolution of swelling and bruising, can take a 4-6weeks.

What is the best age to get a brow lift?

There’s no perfect age for a brow lift, but most patients consider a brow lift in their 40s to 60s, when signs of aging like drooping brows and forehead lines become more prominent. Candidacy for a brow lift depends more on anatomy and goals than age.

How long does a brow lift procedure take?

A brow lift typically takes about two hours, though the exact time depends on the technique used and whether additional procedures are performed at the same time. During your consultation, Dr. Dastoury can explain how your chosen approach may affect the length of your procedure and overall time at the surgical center.

What is recovery like after a brow lift?

Recovery varies from patient to patient, but swelling, bruising, tightness, and temporary numbness around the forehead and scalp are common during early healing. Most patients need to plan for some downtime and should follow Dr. Dastoury’s instructions regarding activity, incision care, and medications. As swelling gradually subsides, the brow settles into a more natural position and the final appearance becomes increasingly apparent. As a double board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Dastoury takes a personalized approach to surgical planning and postoperative care based on each patient's anatomy and procedure.

Will a brow lift leave visible scars?

A brow lift does involve incisions, but the location and appearance of scars depend on the surgical technique. With an endoscopic brow lift, surgeons generally place several small incisions within or behind the hairline. A coronal brow lift uses a longer incision within the scalp, while a hairline brow lift places the incision along the hairline. Dr. Dastoury, a double board-certified cosmetic surgeon, will consider factors such as your hairline, hair density, and facial anatomy when determining which approach may provide the most appropriate result, while also considering incision placement.

How long do the results of a brow lift last?

A brow lift provides long-lasting improvement, but it does not stop the natural aging process. Over time, forehead tissues and skin will continue to change because of factors such as age, genetics, and sun exposure. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and protecting your skin from sun damage may help preserve your results. During your consultation, Dr. Dastoury can discuss the expected longevity of your results based on your anatomy, the surgical technique selected, and your individual goals.

Can a brow lift correct a low or asymmetrical eyebrow?

Yes, a brow lift can reposition a low brow and, in some cases, improve differences in eyebrow height or position. Brow asymmetry can result from natural anatomy, aging, previous injury, or other factors, so treatment must be carefully planned around the existing differences between the two sides of the face. Dr. Dastoury can evaluate your brow position and facial structure to determine whether a brow lift can address your specific concerns. As a double board-certified cosmetic surgeon, he combines advanced surgical training with a personalized approach to facial procedures.

Which brow lift technique is best for patients with a high or receding hairline?

Patients with a high or receding hairline may be candidates for a hairline brow lift, which places the incision at the junction between the forehead and hairline and removes a portion of forehead skin rather than pulling the hairline backward. This can help avoid further elevation of an already high hairline. However, the best technique depends on your hairline, forehead height, hair density, brow position, skin quality, and desired outcome. Dr. Dastoury can assess these factors during your consultation and recommend an approach suited to your facial anatomy.

Can a brow lift be combined with eyelid surgery or a facelift?

A brow lift may be performed alongside eyelid surgery or a facelift when multiple areas of facial aging are contributing to a patient's concerns. For example, a brow lift can address low or sagging brows, while eyelid surgery can address excess skin or tissue around the upper or lower eyelids. Dr. Dastoury’s double board certification as a cosmetic surgeon, with advanced training in maxillofacial and aesthetic surgery, allows him to evaluate how different facial procedures may work together. The appropriate combination depends on your anatomy, facial structure, and aesthetic goals.

What is the difference between an endoscopic, coronal, and hairline brow lift?

An endoscopic brow lift uses several small incisions behind the hairline and a small camera to guide the procedure. A coronal brow lift uses a longer incision extending from ear to ear behind the hairline and may be appropriate for certain patients but is generally not recommended for those with a receding hairline or a tendency toward hair loss. A hairline brow lift places the incision between the hairline and upper forehead and removes a portion of forehead skin and tissue, which can help avoid pulling the hairline backward

What type of anesthesia is used for a brow lift?

A brow lift may be performed using local anesthesia, while general anesthesia may also be an option depending on the surgical approach, patient comfort, and the surgeon's recommendations. The appropriate type of anesthesia will be discussed during your consultation and determined based on your individual needs and the planned procedure.

What is the recovery like after a brow lift?

Recovery after a brow lift varies from person to person and depends in part on the technique used. Patients can generally expect some swelling, bruising, and tenderness around the forehead and brow area during the initial recovery period. Your surgeon will provide specific postoperative instructions to help support healing, and you may need assistance at home for the first few days.

How long do brow lift results last?

A brow lift provides long-lasting changes to the position and appearance of the brows and forehead, but it does not stop the natural aging process. Over time, the skin and underlying tissues will continue to change. How long your results remain apparent can vary based on factors such as your age, skin quality, genetics, lifestyle, and the surgical technique used. Maintaining healthy habits and protecting your skin from sun exposure may help support the appearance of your results over time.

Can a brow lift be combined with other facial procedures?

Yes, a brow lift may be combined with other facial procedures when appropriate to address multiple areas of facial aging during the same surgical plan. Depending on your individual anatomy and goals, your surgeon may discuss combining a brow lift with procedures such as eyelid surgery or other facial rejuvenation treatments.
