If you’re preparing for your breast augmentation procedure, you likely have some anxieties about what to expect afterward. Surgery is just the beginning – your recovery will be one of the most important phases of your cosmetic journey, so it’s important to understand the process. Dr. Kamran Dastoury will give you detailed aftercare instructions to follow, but in the meantime, here are some of our top tips for breast augmentation recovery.
Holistic Healing
At modern surgical arts of Denver, we believe in combining eastern medicine with western science. Thus our post surgery protocols begin 2 weeks prior to the procedure. At this stage we optimize the patient’s healing potential by starting them on the Vitamedica (please place link to their website here) surgery supplements/vitamins and boost their protein intake. Three days before the procedure patients begin an herbal supplement called bromelain which has been shown to decrease inflammation and bruising. During the procedure we proactively utilize anti- inflammatory medication and topical mixtures to decrease bleeding and bruising. Post operatively, patients benefit from continuing their Vitamedica supplements and begin the organic supplements such as Arnica cream, Arnica Tea, Fresh pineapples, pineapple extract (bromelain) for up to 1 month post surgery. Utilizing these strategies we have seen dramatic results for patients with less bruising, swelling, and quicker recovery times. Patients usually return to their normal function in 4-6weeks. In this case patients can resume heavy exercises such as pushups, high intensity training, pilates and swimming in that time frame baring any set backs.
Wear Your Surgical Bra
A surgical bra is one of the best tools you have at your disposal for your recovery. This special type of bra provides support for the implants and helps relieve pressure from the incisions. Make sure to wear it as much as possible for the first few weeks which we will provide for you, removing it only to bathe. Our team will help you locate a surgical bra and find the right sizing – we recommend getting more than one so you can remove it for laundering. Make sure to have plenty of athletic bras on hand, too, once you graduate from wearing the surgical bra. You won’t be able to return to underwire bras at 6 weeks.
Sleep Upright
Sleep is essential after surgery, and sleeping in an upright position helps manage swelling and promotes better blood flow. You should sleep on your back on a recliner or propped on a couple pillows in your bed or couch. Make sure you have enough pillows ahead of time, and if you don’t normally sleep on your back, begin practicing a few days in advance of surgery. Finally, check that your sleeping environment is conducive to restfulness and ensure you have good climate control, plenty of blankets and sheets, and earplugs and noise-canceling devices to help you sleep.
Limit Your Activity Level
For the first week especially, you should limit your activity level. If you normally exercise, plan to wait 4-6 weeks before returning to your regular regimen. After 4-6 weeks, you can gradually increase your activity level as you feel comfortable, making sure not to push yourself too hard. For the first few days after surgery, make sure to walk around the house to keep your blood moving, as this prevents blood clots.
Enlist Help Around the House
For the first few days, you’ll need help from a close friend or family member. Not only should they keep an eye on you and look for any signs of complication, but they’ll need to help with heavy lifting or tasks like cooking, cleaning, and caring for pets and children. Make sure to arrange for this in advance – it’s ideal if this special person is also the one who picks you up from surgery. They can also drive you to follow-up appointments, run errands, and more.
