Renuvion®: A Minimally Invasive Approach To Skin Tightening

What is Renuvion®?

Renuvion® (formally known as J-Plasma®) is a revolutionary technology that uses helium gas and radiofrequency energy to create cold helium plasma, which is used to treat the underside of the skin. The ionized gas stimulates collagen production, immediately tightening the skin.

Skin retraction is almost immediate, but noticeable results will take approximately 4-6 weeks as the initial swelling subsides. Final results may take up to 4-6 months. In the case of neck treatment, several days of swelling and mild bruising are followed by 4-6 weeks of “lumpy bumpy” quality to the skin. The results are typically long-lasting and can remain for up to 3 years, depending on the patient’s initial quality of skin. Renuvion does not replace a face lift or neck lift, but for patients with minimal to moderate skin laxity it can be a great option for facial rejuvenation and to possibly avoid facial incisions/scars.

This technology can also replace the traditional “Tummy Tuck” or abdominoplasty procedure on the abdomen area. Instead of cutting the skin, the Renuvion® technology can stimulate collagen and proteins from underneath and cause the skin to naturally contract instead. At Modern Surgical Arts of Denver, Kamran Dastoury, MD, a Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeon, utilizes the latest technology in order to deliver the most customized esthetic treatment plan and results for his patients. How Renuvion Works

Plasma is an ionized gas that is extremely electrically conductive and is often called the “fourth state of matter,” apart from solids, liquids, and gases. Our board certified surgeon, Dr. Dastoury, performs the technique subdermally (under the skin). He first releases the skin from the underlying attachments by performing liposuction. He then passes a blunt tip cannula, inserting the sterile Renuvion device under the skin via small incisions of less than half a centimeter. The ionized gas is then injected beneath the skin, instantly firming it up. Renuvion may be performed solely to tighten the skin of the face, neck, abdomen, arms, legs, back and buttocks, or immediately following liposuction.

This approach addresses multiple layers, such as the fat volume and loose skin, as needed in each area for the patient. Another advantage to this technology is that it avoids risks of general anesthesia. The procedure is performed in our certified licensed outpatient surgery center under local anesthesia and laughing gas (nitrous oxide) if the patient desires.

A formal consult is necessary by our board certified surgeons in order to evaluate and present a tailored treatment plan for each individual patient.

Side Effects

Renuvion® (J-Plasma®) has few side effects or potential complications. Patients may receive sedation (especially in conjunction with liposuction) or local anesthesia, sometimes accompanied by an oral sedative. If done under local anesthesia, patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure and in the hours after the anesthesia wears off.

What Areas Can Renuvion® Treat?

Renuvion can be used to tighten skin in almost any body area. These common areas include:

  • Arm lift
  • Belt lift (abdomen & sides)
  • Breast lift
  • Neck lift
  • Thigh lift
  • Lower face and neck lift
  • Knee lift
  • Abdomen; “Non-Invasive Tummy tuck”

Recovery

Recovery time for the procedure depends on the extent of your Renuvion treatment. Patients should typically expect to be resting at home for at least 5-7 days post-treatment. After this time, patients can typically return to work and their other regular activities with the approval of their physician. Still, patients should expect some discomfort and continued recovery even after the 10-day mark has passed. Patients will be required to wear a compression garment to help reduce swelling and fluid collection.

Cost

Cost will depend on the length of the procedure and type of sedation.

We encourage patients interested to be seen for a complimentary consult by our Board Certified Surgeons, Kamran Dastoury, MD, for a comprehensive evaluation and treatment options. Call us today at Highlands Ranch Office Phone Number 303-470-3400 to get started.

Pros of Renuvion®

  • Minimally invasive — Small incisions (less than a centimeter) and minimal downtime compared to traditional surgical procedures such as a neck lift or tummy tuck.
  • Dramatic results — This technology appears to provide rather dramatic improvements for a minimally invasive treatment.
  • Short procedure — If done solely, Renuvion only takes about 15-30 minutes per area.
  • Only one treatment — Renuvion typically only requires one treatment, setting it apart from similar minimally invasive alternatives performed in medspas which can take up to 8-10 sessions over several months. However, it’s not unheard of for people to have multiple treatments depending on skin quality, laxity, and patient desires.
  • Procedures performed only by a Surgeon — At Modern Surgical Arts of Denver our board certified surgeons perform Renuvion procedure in a sterile environment. This is in contrast to many many medspas, where the procedure is done the skin, by a nurse or esthetician, and needs to occur over multiple sessions.
