Ideal Candidates for Male Tummy Tucks: Are You One?

Tummy tucks are most commonly performed on women, but a growing number of men are realizing the benefits. If you’re curious about the tummy tuck, your best first step is to consult our double-board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Kamran Dastoury. During a consultation, you can learn more about whether a tummy tuck can help you feel more confident. In the meantime, here’s what to know about the male tummy tuck and whether you’re an ideal candidate for this body contouring procedure.

You Have Stubborn Abdominal Fat

The stomach can be one of the most difficult areas from which to lose fat. If you’ve tried diet and exercise but aren’t seeing results, a tummy tuck is an effective option. Keep in mind the difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat – visceral fat is the type of fat that surrounds your organs, while subcutaneous fat is the type of fat that exists just under your skin. Visceral fat can’t be removed with cosmetic surgery but at Modern Surgical Arts of Denver we do offer a medical managment approach to viseral fat reduction that can make a big difference in the lives of our patients both for wellness and for ideal results aesthetically. Subcutaneous fat on the other hand is redaly accessible for correction with surgical treatments.  Dr. Dastoury will assess your stomach to determine the type of fat and how to best treat it.

You Have Sagging Skin

Men can experience sagging skin after losing significant amounts of weight, especially around the stomach. Unfortunately, in severe cases there’s not much you can do about it outside of cosmetic surgery. Sagging skin in this area can cause symptoms like chafing while also interfering with the fit of your clothing. Dr. Dastoury can get rid of sagging skin, creating a smoother, tighter look to your abdomen. We utalize several advanced techniques and devices to either surigcally remove the skin or heat and shrink the skin if amenable. We have several body contouring devices that can assist with tissue contraction such as VASER liposuction and Renuvion Radiofrequency Energy.

You Have Stretched or Separated Abdominal Muscles

Weight gain in the stomach can cause the abdominal muscles to separate and stretch, weakening them. This can cause a variety of symptoms, like back pain, because you no longer have the necessary support in your stomach. Dr. Dastoury can suture the muscles back together, allowing them to function again and getting rid of any gaps in the abdomen muscles, correction of weakness in core muscles of the abdomen and  appearances caused by separated muscles.

You’re In Overall Good Health

As with any surgery, being in good health is key. Dr. Dastoury will perform a complete evaluation of your medical history and may ask you to complete blood work to ensure you can safely undergo anesthesia and surgery. If you have any major medical conditions or take medications, make sure to discuss them during your consultation.

You Can Take Time Off

Recovery is key to getting good cosmetic results, so make sure you can take 1-2 weeks away from work depending on the type of work and procedure performed – or longer if you work a physical job. You’ll also need to arrange for assistance around the house for the first few days and ensure you can rest without interruption. You’ll also need to avoid extensive activities, including exercise, for 4-6 weeks. At 6 weeks most patients are back to full functional capacity.
