Gynecomastia Surgery: What to Expect Before, During, and After

Gynecomastia surgery is one of the most effective ways to get rid of “man boobs.” However, as you dream about your results, keep in mind that it’s still surgery and thus requires careful preparation and an understanding of what you can expect. Dr. Kamran Dastoury will walk you through the specifics of gynecomastia surgery during your consultation. In the meantime, here’s what you can expect before, during, and after gynecomastia surgery here at Modern Surgical Arts of Denver.

Before Gynecomastia Surgery

Before surgery, it’s important to spend time preparing. During your consultation with Dr. Dastoury, ask questions and understand the process so you feel confident and comfortable moving forward. Dr. Dastoury may ask you to meet with your regular physician if you have medications that need to be adjusted, and you may need to get blood work to ensure you can safely undergo anesthesia. Some of the medications or supplements that cause this condition include androgens, steroid use, testosterone supplements, some herbal supplements, and propecia for hair loss prevention. You’ll also sign paperwork and review your detailed aftercare instructions with our team so you know how to prepare for recovery. You won’t be able to drive yourself home, meaning you’ll need to arrange for transportation and help from a close friend or loved one. You’ll need to take one to two weeks off work depending on the type of work you do, so prepare accordingly. Patients that can work from home usually can resume some of their duties the next day!

During Gynecomastia Surgery

We perform gynecomastia surgery at our private, accredited surgical facility which meets the same safety standards as your local hospital.  When you arrive, you’ll meet with our team and review your procedure, ensuring you’re properly prepared. Dr. Dastoury can perform gynecomastia with differing levels of anesthesia depending on your unique surgical plan. He’ll perform a previously discussed incision on each side of your chest, removing excess tissue with liposuction, surgical excision, or both. If your gynecomastia is severe, he may also remove excess skin and lift the nipple-areola complex higher on the chest wall. Once complete, your incisions will be closed, and you’ll be sent home for recovery.

After Gynecomastia Surgery

For one to two weeks, you should plan to rest and avoid any strenuous activities. You can resume exercise or physical activities at 3 weeks up to 50% of normal routine. We implement herbal supplements and holistic approaches for faster recovery.  The most important step in your recovery is wearing a compression vest, which will help your skin adhere to the new contours, as well as manage inflammation and fluid buildup. Wear it as much as possible until Dr. Dastoury indicates otherwise. We don’t prescribe opioids and will instead give you other ways to manage discomfort (which typically lasts for the first few days before fading). Within a few weeks, inflammation will subside, and you can begin to enjoy your final results. Scars can take up to one year to settle into their final appearance – wearing sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure can help.
