How Does Plastic Surgery Work? A Deep Dive

Today more than ever, individuals are seeking ways to enhance their appearance or address physical concerns. From reconstructive surgery to cosmetic procedures, plastic surgery is a tool that can be used to help patients achieve many different outcomes.

If you are considering plastic surgery, it can be helpful to understand as much as you can about these procedures, including what concerns plastic surgery can address, what you can expect from the procedure, and what your recovery might look like.

At Modern Surgical Arts of Denver, our double board certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Dastoury, is invested in the health and well-being of each patient. We strive for “natural and balanced aesthetics” which drive all of our surgical procedures in Denver, CO.

An Introduction to Plastic Surgery

The term “plastic” comes from a Greek word meaning “reshaping”. This is useful for describing the goal of plastic surgery. Whether we are reconstructing a part of the body after injury or addressing a cosmetic concern, we are using modern techniques and methods to reshape the body.

Plastic surgery can be used to describe both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon is an individual who has the expertise and qualifications to perform both. At our practice, we know how important both types of procedures can be for the health, well-being, and happiness of our patients.

How Does Plastic Surgery Work?

Consultation and Assessment

Regardless of the type of procedure that you are looking for, you will find that the process is very similar for each type of plastic surgery. We always begin with a consultation and initial assessment. We want to make sure that each patient is well-suited to the surgery to help promote success during surgery and recovery.

The ideal candidate for plastic surgery is someone who has health and well-being both physically and mentally. We will ask you about your medical history and talk to you about your reasons for seeking out plastic surgery. You should also be a non-smoker or be willing to refrain from smoking for several weeks before and after your treatment. Once we determine that you are a good candidate, the next step will be to wait for the day of surgery.

Preparation and Anesthesia

When the day of your surgery arrives, we will begin the procedure by preparing you for the operation. This may mean making markings on your body and taking “before” pictures so that you are able to compare them to your results. Next, you will be placed under anesthesia. General anesthesia may be used for some plastic surgery services while others may only require local anesthesia with sedation.

Incisions

Once you are under anesthesia, we can make the necessary incisions in the surgery area. With both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, we put an emphasis on discreet incision locations that will be as invisible as possible after they heal. We will prepare you for what to expect regarding incisions and scarring at your consultation.

Reshaping and Reconstruction

Once the incisions have been made, we can reshape and reconstruct underlying tissues. This can include suturing underlying structures, removing tissue, adding implants, performing liposuction, and much more depending on your surgery.

Closure of Incisions

Once we are happy with the results of the reshaping process, we will carefully close the incisions. Depending on the surgery we may dress the incisions, insert a drain, or put you in a surgical bra. You will wake up from your anesthesia and be placed in a recovery room. With most of our operations, you are able to go home the same day.

Post-Operative Care

When you come home from your surgery, you will want to have the area prepared for several days of rest. Keep everything you will need close and have someone there to help you. For most surgeries, you will be able to get up and walk around the house even in the first couple of days after surgery, but you will want to avoid anything more strenuous. You will be given detailed instructions for how to take care of your incision as well as a few dos and don’ts to follow as you recover from surgery.
