What is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an injectable cosmetic skin treatment used to fill specific areas in the lower portion of the face and in the hands; it stimulates the body’s natural collagen which then fills in wrinkles long term. The treatment is intended for wrinkles and folds around the mouth, nose, and areas of fat loss in the face. Radiesse immediately replenishes lost volume and compared to other fillers Radiesse has a diverse numbers of uses.

Radiesse is made of calcium hydroxyapatite gel microspheres (CaHa). CaHa is made up of ion of phosphate and calcium. The injectable gel initially does the work and as time goes on CaHa stimulates the body’s own collagen, allowing the skin to produce more of its own filler. Eventually the CaHa absorbs back into your body leaving the collagen in its place, because of this treatment results can last for over a year and up to two years. Patients with bleeding disorders, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding shouldn’t use Radiesse, and those with a history of herpes might have an outbreak following the procedure.

Radiesse is compatible with the body’s tissue, meaning your body won’t reject it. While it is considered nontoxic and hypoallergenic there are still many risks to treatment and clients should take these risks into consideration before opting to do the Radiesse treatment; though these cases are rare at Modern Surgical Arts we ensure that the following information is freely and readily available to all of our clients.

Possible side effects of Radiesse include:

  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Infection to the injection site
  • Formation of nodules
  • Sensation loss
  • Difficulty with normal movement
  • Mild irritation

Possible permanent complications include:

  • Scarring
  • Stroke
  • Paleness or a white tinge to affected skin
  • Abnormal vision
  • Blindness
  • Severe pain

Who is a Candidate for Radiesse?

The Radiesse treatment is safe and easy and can help those who have issues with creases in the corner of the mouth, the volume of their cheeks, and sagging jawlines. It can also reduce the appearance of jowls, strengthen weak chins, and fix nasolabial folds. The Radiesse treatment is also an option for people with aged skin on the back of their hands.

Target Areas for Radiesse

Clients who receive the Radiesse treatment usually tend to get them particularly around the mouth, where the skin in wrinkled or folds on itself. And in some cases Radiesse is used to fill in deep scars and to fill in lost volume in the back of the hands as well.

What is the Radiesse procedure like?

The first step in any of our procedures at Modern Surgical Art is your consultation. During your consultation one of our board certified plastic surgeons will inform you of where the injections will be, the dosage for the treatment, any risks associated with the procedure, and prepare you for the treatment. As with most cosmetic filler treatments, a needle is involved and so you may experience slight discomfort or pain during the treatment. Without the aid of anesthetics Radiesse feels like any other injection you would receive at a doctor’s office; however, there are usually multiple injections involved and the face is one of our most sensitive body parts so the doctor will use a numbing cream to prevent the session from being unnecessarily uncomfortable. Our board certified plastic surgeons at Modern Surgical Art use the latest in techniques and technology to minimize any discomfort that our patients may feel or worry about feeling.

How long does Radiesse last?

Your skin is being plumped by a gel so results will be visible immediately following the treatment and full results can appear within a week of treatment. The top feature of Radiesse is that it helps your body produce its own collagen; and for that reason the results are long lasting and there are individuals who benefit from long term results for up to two years before another procedure is required.

Who is qualified to provide Radiesse?

When seeking cosmetic treatment of any kind it is always important to ensure that your provider is a board certified health care professional like those on our team at Modern Surgical Arts. Board certification lets clients know that their health care provider and their facilities are held at the utmost level of education, cleanliness, and quality. Even though Radiesse is a low risk procedure you ensure the best possible outcome for yourself when you choose an experienced and qualified health care facility.

Why choose Radiesse?

There can always be alternatives that work better for different client’s situations. These include collagen injections, fat fillers, Juvederm treatment, and face-lift procedures. Juvederm is an alternative skin filler that is made of hyaluronic acid that mimics the body’s natural hyaluronic acid. There are ranges of Juvederm product that are meant for different areas of the face but not many stimulate the body to produce its own collagen and have a long lasting effect as Radiesse.

Other alternative interventions in addition to fillers include:

  • Microdermabrasion
  • A chemical peel
  • Laser skin treatments

Whatever your preference may be it is most important to find a care provider with the right experience and qualifications; so you are able to receive the best treatment for your situation.

Preparing for Radiesse

Before receiving the Radiesse injections you should always consult with your doctor about any medication that you are taking, some medications like warfarin or aspirin can cause excessive bleeding or bruising at the treatment location. Your doctor will also enquire about issues with your hands (if this is where the treatment will be done) including disabilities, diseases, or injures.

Before Radiesse

In order to make the procedure and subsequent aftercare more comfortable and less tedious, the following are recommended:

  • Avoid blood thinning medications such as Aspirin, Fish Oil, Ibuprofen, and Aleve for at least one week prior to the procedure. It is always important to consult your doctor before the procedure if you are taking any of these for medical reasons.
  • Avoid supplements for at least a week before the procedure.
  • Avoid topical products or any anti-aging products for at least 3 days before the procedure
  • Avoid excessive heat
  • Avoid strenuous exercises
  • Do not intake any alcoholic beverages for 24 hours before the treatment
  • Avoid bleaching, using hair removal cream, tweezing, or waxing the day for at least 3 days prior to the procedure.

After Radiesse

Her are a few aftercare tips:

  • Avoid exercise for 24-48 hours
