What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure to improve the abdomen’s appearance. During a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, excess skin and fat are removed from the abdomen, and connective tissue in the abdomen is usually tightened as well. A tummy tuck can remove loose and excess skin and fat and tighten weak fascia surrounding the muscles of the abdomen. There are several different types of tummy tucks. We offer mini tummy tucks with skin tightening, full, abdominoplasty, or an extended abdominalplasty.

Modern surgical arts, we understand that each person and body is different. Thus we customize and individualized to care for our patients which is directly evaluated by our double board-certified, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Kamran Dastoury

Types of Tummy Tucks

We provide several types of abdominoplasties, and our board-certified cosmetic and plastic surgeons will help each client choose the best one for their needs. These options include:

Traditional Abdominoplasty

These are the most commonly performed tummy tuck procedures because they address the patient’s entire abdominal area and often involve the belly button to ensure natural results. They are also commonly paired with abdominal liposuction.

Mini Tummy Tucks

These are for patients who are within 10% of their ideal body weight and are content with making changes to only the part of the abdomen below the navel. They require only a small incision and usually do not involve repositioning the navel. They are less dramatic than a traditional tummy tuck and also boast a shorter recovery time. The skin above the belly button we are able to heat with radio, frequency, energy in order to get shrinkage if the patient is a good candidate for this approach.

Extended Tummy Tuck

This involves removing love handles on either side of the waist and fat and excess skin from the stomach area. The incision is usually low and will not be visible. This procedure allows for treating a larger area than the traditional tummy tuck.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

Patients who have had gastric bypass surgery often seek this type of body lift, as the scars from this procedure extend to the back.

Candidates for Tummy Tucks

To be a candidate for an abdominoplasty, you should be in good general health, carry excess weight in the midsection, have loose or droopy skin around the abdomen, be committed to maintaining the results with diet and regular exercise, be done having children, be a nonsmoker, and be at a stable weight close to your goal weight.

Tummy Tuck Procedure

The procedure is performed using either general or twilight with local anesthesia; most surgeons perform the surgery while the patient is completely unconscious, as this allows the abdominal muscles to be completely relaxed and enable for  repairing the abdominal muscles. The surgery itself takes anywhere from 2-4hours to complete, depending on the procedure being performed and any additional procedures. The number and length of incisions also depend on the procedure being performed, and most tummy tucks involve changing the position of the navel to make the tightened skin appear more natural.

Following the abdominoplasty, the skin is stretched down, and the excess skin is trimmed away. When the surgery is complete, the skin is sutured with surgical stitches. With these in place, new skin cells will join together at the incision site, closing the wound over time. A surgical drain will be inserted when the stitches are put in place; this speeds up the healing process and often alleviates the pain from the buildup of fluids underneath the skin.

Tummy Tuck Recovery and Results

A Tummy tuck is usually very well tolerated, and the most intense pain is felt in the first few days following the surgery. Your abdominal area will be swollen for the first week, and the skin in the area will be primarily numb for several weeks or even months. Feeling will return slowly, and it will take five to six weeks for your energy to replenish. You must maintain a healthy diet and exercise to ensure you experience the long-lasting results you desire.

We take pride in attaining, the best aesthetic scars possible. The scars could take up to one year to fully heal during which time we will be treating them extensively with local, topical creams, silicone sheeting and adjunctive procedures, such as Laser or micro needling devices if the patient so desire.
